Tailwall
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux
Eat. Grow. Shed. Survive what you left behind.
Tailwall is a snake game with one twist: every time you eat, there's a chance your entire tail freezes in place as a permanent wall. Your head survives at length 1 and keeps going, but now you're navigating around your own history. The arena fills up with the walls you shed, corridors get tighter, and eventually there's nowhere left to go.
The longer your tail when it drops, the more walls appear at once. Short runs leave scattered obstacles. Long runs block off entire sections of the board. The drop chance scales with your length, sometimes you shed at 3, sometimes you snake across half the board before it happens.
Features
- Tail drop mechanic: your shed body becomes permanent walls
- 10 grid sizes from 5×5 (silly) to 50×50 (very spacious)
- Two collision modes: Dies (instant death) or Stops (forgiving, lets you redirect)
- Score accumulates across multiple tail drops in a single run, just keep eating
- Speed ramps with snake length — longer means faster
- High scores tracked per grid size
- Optional smooth movement interpolation
- The usual retro beep-boop sound effects!!!
Controls
- Move snake
Built from scratch in C++ with SDL2. This is the fifth free games in five weeks and I'm not slowing down. Follow and they show up in your feed automatically.
I post what I'm building next in my Discord before it hits itch.io. If this was fun, a rating helps other players find it.
